In Budget 2022 government committed $28.5 million over two years towards Whānau resilience with a focus on wāhine and rangatahi.
The Strengthening Wāhine Māori Leadership fund enables community providers in priority areas to work directly with wāhine Māori to build their cultural capability, leadership, and influencing skills to help strengthen their place within the whānau structure.
It seeks to support projects which have an impact on promoting wāhine Māori leadership and resilience according to their own tikanga and mātauranga. Learnings from this initiative will be shared with agencies to inform further work to improve outcomes for different cohorts of wāhine Māori.
This initiative aims to contribute to equitable outcomes and improving well-being for wāhine Māori in a cultural context, that recognises strengths, aspirations, and wāhine-led solutions.
The outcomes sought from this initiative include:
- Wāhine Māori have the support and resources to seek out and access opportunities in line with their aspirations
