Te Puni Kōkiri was established under the Māori Development Act 1991 to promote “increases in the levels of achievement attained by Māori” in a number of key sectors.

In 2019, the Minister for Māori Development identified key directions for Te Puni Kōkiri to strengthen its strategic impact, as government’s principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development.

These provide the foundations for Te Puni Kōkiri to act as a strong system leader to improve Māori wellbeing.
