The fund provides $730 million of investment and support for Māori to determine their own housing solutions. The investment combines previously announced funding from Budget 2021 ($380m) and the Māori Infrastructure Fund ($350m).

Investment from Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga will include immediate housing supply and repairs and will support Māori-led regional groups to scale up their housing developments over the next five to ten years.

Whai Kāinga, Whai Oranga has two pathways for allocating investment.

• The Project Pathway opens on October 20 and is nationwide, with a focus on deliverability and readiness of delivery partners.
• The Programme Pathway opens next year. This pathway focuses on delivery through regional partners. The initial focus regions for the Programme Pathway are Te Tai Tokerau, Tairawhiti, Heretaunga / Hastings-Napier, Taranaki and Central North Island, and Bay of Plenty - including Rotorua.

Applying for Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga

To apply for Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga investment, whānau Māori can use the existing Māori delivery channels. For example, through the Māori Housing Network at Te Puni Kōkiri or through the MAIHI partnerships programme at HUD.

Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga and MAIHI Ka Ora - the National Māori Housing Strategy

The recently released MAIHI Ka Ora the National Māori Housing Strategy puts in place a long-term plan to work in partnership with iwi and Māori to deliver on this vision by focusing on our shared priorities. One of those priorities identified is the need to grow and invest in Māori Housing Supply.

MAIHI Ka Ora, speaks directly to supporting whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori housing sector providers with housing aspirations.

In the development of MAIHI Ka Ora, the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga investment demonstrates the Government is committed to creating space for Māori-led local solutions – especially when delivering housing at scale.

Whai Kainga Whai Oranga also helps creates space to allow Māori housing solutions to thrive. Together, Te Puni Kōkiri and HUD are investing in an existing pipeline of Māori-led developments and repairs to address immediate need.
