On Monday 6 August 2012, Minister of Māori Affairs Hon Dr Pita Sharples hosted a hui to discuss Māori rights and interests in water. Many iwi from around the motu were represented and included Te Arawa, Ngāi Tahu, Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and Ngāti Kahungunu, as well as the New Zealand Māori Council and the Federation of Māori Authorities.
