Going for Growth with Māori | Tōnui Māori connects with the Government’s Going for Growth agenda, focusing specifically on Māori economic growth. The approach outlines opportunities relating to infrastructure investment, exports, and ways to improve the regulatory and legislative framework.
The Māori economy is experiencing significant growth (Te Ōhanga Māori: The Māori economy www.berl.co.nz/te-ohanga-maori) and Going for Growth with Māori | Tōnui Māori supports this by providing practical actions and advice that public service agencies can use to further lift Māori economic development. Examples include promoting Māori tourism, and leveraging free trade agreements and indigenous collaboration agreements.
One of the first actions we’re taking to support Going for Growth with Māori | Tōnui Māori is the proposed refresh of the Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993. The Act was designed to help protect whenua Māori but, 30 years after it was passed, some aspects need updating.
We have proposed several amendments to help make the Act more usable. These will help streamline Māori Land Court processes, give landowners more say about certain types of leases, make housing development easier, and clarify succession processes.
Consultation on the proposed changes runs until 11.59pm, Friday 23 May 2025.
