New te reo Māori speech competition – Waha Kōrero

Our friends over at Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori recently launched a new speech competition – Waha Kōrero.

Waha Kōrero is an inaugural speech competition for adults. It is an opportunity for native and highly proficient speakers of te reo Māori.

Waha Kōrero is for:

  • anyone aged 18 years and over
  • people based in Aotearoa
  • highly competent speakers of te reo Māori.

The competition will run over three rounds. Round one is open now until 28th July 2024. Round two happens on Zoom over August and September, and a prestigious final round takes place before a live audience in Te Whanganui-a-Tara on the 21st of September 2024.

Speeches will be impromptu except for Round One, which people can prepare a little for.

There is a $10,000 first prize, $6,000 for second and $4,000 for third.

There is only one week left to enter – maybe yourself or someone you know! Karawhiua e hoa mā!
