As part of the Government’s approach to addressing housing issues in New Zealand, $15 million has been set aside in Budget 18 for Māori housing repair projects and papakāinga.
“Our strong focus on housing as a Government will reach whānau, hapū, iwi and rōpū – we are targeting homelessness, increasing public housing, improving the quality of rental homes, building affordable homes, and looking for partnership opportunities," says Minister Mahuta.

As part of the Government’s approach to addressing housing issues in New Zealand, $15 million has been set aside in Budget 18 for Māori housing repair projects and papakāinga.
Minister Mahuta has been working alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development to ensure Māori housing needs and aspirations are met across the Government’s housing programme.
“Our strong focus on housing as a Government will reach whānau, hapū, iwi and rōpū – we are targeting homelessness, increasing public housing, improving the quality of rental homes, building affordable homes, and looking for partnership opportunities.”
“My particular focus as Minister for Māori Development will be community-led housing repair programmes to help whānau living in very poor quality housing, and papakāinga projects building new healthy and affordable rental homes for whānau.”
“These initiatives will strengthen whānau and communities, not only improving housing but also increasingly looking to take a social enterprise approach, offering opportunities to build financial capability, learn skills and contribute to local economies.”
This new putea for 2018/19 builds on existing funding for Te Puni Kōkiri to support whānau, hapū and iwi Māori to achieve their housing aspirations. It means more whānau will have access to healthy, affordable, secure homes.
Recent Māori led projects that have been supported by Te Puni Kōkiri include the Kōkōhīnau Marae papakāinga in Te Teko for flood-displaced whānau; Te Pou Oranga o Whakatōhea who are providing home repairs; and Ngā Hau e Whā National Marae papakāinga in Christchurch who are providing affordable housing for whānau in Te Waipounamu.
“Budget 18 will provide more funding for whānau to ensure they can access practical assistance and resources to support further papakāinga development and housing repairs,” says Minister Mahuta.
The funding aligns with the Government’s priorities for building affordable houses, reducing inequality and addressing the social and infrastructure deficits that have emerged in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
