Parliament has refreshed the legislation that supports businesses and Māori governance entities to cope with the immediate impacts of COVID-19. The provisions in the new Act are part of the Government’s continuing wider pandemic response.
Originally these provisions were set to expire at the end March 2021, but they have been brought back into effect by the COVID-19 Response (Management Measures) Legislation Act 2021 (the 2021 Act). The reinstated provisions will continue in effect from 3 November 2021, until 30 April 2022.
The operational period for these sections has been extended by Order in Council until 30 October 2022.

Changes to governance obligations and compliance
The COVID-19 Response (Requirements for Entities – Modifications and Exemptions) Act provides governance entities with relief from certain statutory obligations and obligations in their constitutions and other rules that are impossible or impractical because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

* The provisions relating to electronic means and modification also apply to post-settlement governance entities.

Complying with the provisions
The new provisions for Māori entities apply across three Acts Te Puni Kōkiri administers, and to the following entities where and when needed. The modification and exemption powers can be applied by entities until 30 October 2022.
