Chief Executive Michelle Hippolite added the voice of Te Puni Kōkiri to the many tributes to Hon Parekura Horomia today.

”We are gathering to remember the former Minister of Māori of Affairs, rangatira, friend and whanaunga.”

“Our memories are of a generous man who worked tirelessly for the people.”

Mrs Hippolite says Parekura Horomia will also be remembered for the milestones of his work - the creation of Māori Television, as a steward for Treaty negotiations and his leadership of the Māori Affairs portfolio.

“At Te Puni Kōkiri we will also remember him as a leader who stood alongside us in his commitment to making positive changes for Māori.  His role as a public servant was enhanced by his kindness and ability to connect with people from all walks of life.”

“Parekura fully supported this organisation’s policy shift from a deficit outlook to the inspirational framework of Realising Māori Potential.

“This was a reflection of his belief that the public service was a tool for Māori to take control of our own destiny, to realise our own dreams and aspirations. That’s a legacy.
