Feedback Opportunity
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Maru Taranaki Trust (the Rūnanga) is seeking a mandate to represent Ngāti Maru ki Taranaki in direct negotiations with the Crown for the comprehensive settlement of their historical Treaty of Waitangi claims . The Rūnanga has developed a draft Mandate Strategy and the Office of Treaty Settlements now invites submissions on the document.
The draft mandate strategy states that the Rūnanga seeks a mandate to negotiate all of the historical claims of Ngāti Maru ki Taranaki, whether registered or unregistered, relating to Crown actions and omissions that occurred prior to 21 September 1992. The draft mandate strategy states that the following claims will be settled through the negotiation process:
Claims to be settled in full: Wai 136, Wai 1609
Claims to be settled so far as they relate to Ngāti Maru ki Taranaki: Wai 54, Wai 126, Wai 131, Wai 139, Wai 583, Wai 889 (historical aspects only)
The draft mandate strategy outlines the Ngāti Maru claimant community to be represented in comprehensive negotiations, the governance structure of the proposed mandated entity and the proposed hui process. The Rūnanga will use an independent election company to manage the voting process which includes postal votes, internet voting and in person voting at one of three mandate hui.
The draft mandate strategy and supporting material is available on the Office of Treaty Settlements website www.ots.govt.nz and the Te Puni Kōkiri website www.tpk.govt.nz, and also on the Ngāti Maru website http://ngatimaru.co.nz/.
There is now an opportunity to review the strategy and we invite submissions, views and inquiries. The Crown encourages members of Ngāti Maru ki Taranaki to participate in this feedback process by sending comments to OTS_subs@justice.govt.nz or to Settlement Development Team, Office of Treaty of Settlements, SX 10111, Wellington.
