A total of three homes have been built at the papakāinga in Hastings, with one three-bedroom and two four-bedroom homes to provide safe, warm and affordable rental housing for the Tawhai whānau who has lived on the site for almost 70 years.

“This whānau has traversed a significant journey to get here. Today they realise the aspirations of their parents, by developing a legacy for future generations including more than 100 grandchildren,” says Ms Grennell.

Ms Grennell is proud to include this papakāinga housing development in the expanding portfolio of Māori housing projects Te Puni Kōkiri has supported across the motu.

“The whānau focus on the wellbeing of mokopuna and the generations to come is perhaps best captured through their guiding vision ‘manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua – utilise the whenua for the wellbeing of whānau’.

“They have catered for their future by establishing affordable rental accommodation on their own whenua. It’s wonderful to see.”

Te Puni Kōkiri Māori Housing Network contributed $457,603.00 to the papakāinga housing construction. An additonal $69,000.00  was contributed towards the feasibility of the project.
