New Zealand’s future growth and prosperity will depend on our ability to successfully connect with the world, especially our key economic partners, and to build our exports.
The New Zealand Inc China Strategy is the second in a series of strategies to deliver improved strategic planning, coordination and efficiency among New Zealand Inc agencies.
The New Zealand Inc China strategy sets ambitious trade and economic goals, and aims to improve our political relationships and people-to-people links, with government agencies and business working closely together.
Why China?
China is the world’s second largest economy. It is still growing relatively fast and is a major influencer in the Asia Pacific region.
By 2025 China could be New Zealand’s largest economic partner. We need to identify opportunities now and how best to position for future.
Five Goals and Priority Actions under each
Developing and capitalising on NZ’s relationship with China is crucial to delivering on government’s Economic Growth Agenda.
To realise the vision five key goals have been identified. Each goal has a cluster group of agencies and each cluster group has a lead agency.
To kick start the strategy, over 20 priority actions have been identified for financial year 2011/12 – these are new or enhanced activities resulting from the strategy work, in addition to agencies’ business-as-usual work on China. Priority actions will be reviewed, refreshed and added to in future years.
One of the priority actions is to “build and consolidate Māori cultural and business linkages with China”. While, Te Puni Kōkiri is the lead agency for this priority action we intend to work closely with Iwi, Māori businesses, Māori stakeholders, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and others to achieve this action.
