Stats NZ is consulting with the public of Aotearoa New Zealand about modernising the 2028 Census.

Stats NZ wants to find better ways of collecting and sharing data and statistics, such as reusing data that’s already available to help produce census information. Stats NZ will still use surveys and other options if the data required is not available or good enough.
As an organisation that uses data and statistics to inform decision-making in the interest of Māori wellbeing and development, we invite you to have your say on what the census could look like in Aotearoa New Zealand from 2028 and beyond. We want to hear from you on our proposed approach and what is important to you.
We’d also appreciate any consideration you may give to encouraging other communities or networks to share their views. You are welcome to reuse this content.

There are downloadable files in te reo Māori, Cook Islands Māori, Fijian, Niuean, Samoan, Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan.

Alternate formats, including Easy Read, are available to help people access information about the consultation in a way that best meets their needs. Formats available to download include Audio, Braille, Easy Read, Large Print, and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

Other ways to have your say
There are other ways to have your say. ‘Your data, Your views’ provides dedicated spaces on social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for everyone to kōrero about their aspirations for our long-term statistical future.
Stats NZ people will also be out in the community facilitating dedicated engagements with community organisations and appearing in community centres across the country.
