Tamariki from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Wairarapa, Hutt Intermediate School and Pomare Primary School are this year’s winners of the Te Puni Kōkiri Te Reo and Tikanga Māori Award for the Outlook for Someday Sustainable Film Awards.
The awards ceremony was held at TVNZ in Auckland on December 10.
Entrants up to the age of 24 are encouraged to choose any genre they like, to film with any camera they like, and to interpret ‘sustainability’ in the way that makes best sense to them. For the second year in a row, Te Puni Kōkiri sponsored the Te Reo and Tikanga Māori Award for a film making use of the Māori language and culture.
This year’s winners were The Matthews and Riwai-Couch tamariki from the three Wairarapa kura for Our Whare – a bilingual film that shows couch tamariki how every bit counts when it comes to saving resources in our home.
“I am honoured to stand here and pay tribute to this year’s entrants who wove the threads of our language and culture into a visual tapestry depicting the essence of sustainability,” says Te Puni Kōkiri’s policy analyst Aaron Munro.
“Through the digital domain, they have demonstrated their ability to bring both our worlds together and I congratulate them on their efforts,” he says.
More than 100 people attended the awards ceremony including finalists, judges, sponsors and special guest director of Under the Mountain Jonathan King.
This film, as well as the other winning entries, can now be seen on the Outlook For Sunday website at www.theoutlookforsomeday.net as well as www.tvnz.co.nz.
